What is ToTo: Topic Today?
ToTo: Topic Today is a free daily language learning app that delivers one short reading story per day, calibrated to the learner's CEFR level (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2). It supports Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Romanian, Swedish, and English. Each story is written so learners understand approximately 95% of the words — the lexical coverage threshold that research identifies as optimal for vocabulary acquisition through extensive reading (Schmitt, Jiang & Grabe, 2011). ToTo takes 3 to 5 minutes per day. It is free on Android via Google Play.
Unlike drill-based language apps such as Duolingo or Babbel, ToTo focuses specifically on reading comprehension through daily stories. This approach is grounded in extensive reading research: meta-analyses by Nakanishi (2015) and Sangers et al. (2025) confirm that regular reading of level-appropriate material improves vocabulary, reading comprehension, fluency, and overall language proficiency. ToTo is designed for learners who want to build a sustainable daily reading habit that compounds over time.
